1971年1月31日、アポロ14号はケネディ宇宙センターから打ち上げられ、運命に見舞われたアポロ13号ミッションの予定着陸地点であるフラ・マウロ高原に着陸しました。月面降下中に深刻な問題が発生し、ミッションの中止とアポロ計画の将来が脅かされましたが、指揮官アラン・シェパードは手動で月着陸モジュールを地表に導きました。月面に足を踏み入れたシェパードは「長い道のりだったが、私たちはここにいる」と宣言しました。
