Tasting Notes

Nose: Sweet Sherry influences, stewed apple and fig aromas complemented by zesty orange notes. A delicate herbal edge mingles with hints of fresh sea air. Unearth Highland history with Banff 1966 – Gordon & MacPhail “Rare Old” (bottled 2015, Lot RO/15/03).
Distilled at the long-silent Banff distillery and laid down in a single refill sherry butt, this elusive malt matured for nearly half a century before Gordon & MacPhail selected it for their prestige Rare Old line. Drawn at a graceful 46 % ABV, non-chill-filtered and natural in colour, only 362 individually numbered bottles preserve Banff’s cereal-rich core layered with polished oak, citrus oil and gentle rancio spice—a once-in-a-generation glimpse of a lost Highland voice.

Why We Think You’ll Love It

  • From the silent Banff distillery—an increasingly scarce chance to taste authentic 1960s Highland craftsmanship.

  • Refill sherry butt adds refined dried-fruit sweetness and polished oak without masking the spirit’s bright cereal character.

  • Bottled at 46 % ABV, non-chill-filtered, natural colour—preserving full body, aroma and a burnished-gold hue.

  • Part of Gordon & MacPhail’s elite “Rare Old” series—strictly 362 bottles, coveted by collectors and whisky historians.

  • Harmonious balance of orchard fruit, creamy vanilla, subtle spice and gentle coastal freshness—perfect for contemplative sipping.

Pour a measure of this distinguished Banff and savour an evocative union of Highland elegance, time-softened oak and bygone distilling art—an unforgettable dram that keeps a lost distillery’s spirit alive in every sip.

The Distillery

Banff
Originally established as the Mill of Banff Distillery by Major James McKilligan in 1824 at Mains of Colleonard Farm, just south of Banff, this early site closed in 1863 when Simpson’s son built a new distillery at Inverboyndie—later known as Banff Distillery. Although Banff played a notable role in Scotland’s Highland malt whisky tradition, it ceased operations in 1983, was partially demolished in 1985, and suffered further destruction in a 1991 fire. As a result, Banff now ranks among Scotland’s lost distilleries, with remaining casks and bottlings—such as those in the Gordon & MacPhail Rare Old series—highly coveted by whisky collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
