North Port Brechin 1981 Connoisseurs Choice is a rare and highly collectible Highland single malt Scotch whisky from the closed North Port Brechin Distillery, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for their iconic Connoisseurs Choice series. Distilled in 1981 and matured in refill American hogsheads, this historic expression was bottled in 2004, offering a rare opportunity to experience the character of this long-lost distillery.

North Port (Brechin) is one of Scotland’s silent distilleries, with stocks becoming increasingly scarce and sought after. Refill American oak maturation allows the spirit’s natural profile to shine, developing gentle layers of fruit, malt sweetness, and soft oak over time, resulting in a refined and balanced whisky.

The Distillery

North-Port Brechin
North Port Distillery, originally founded as Towhead Distillery by David, John, and Alexander Guthrie in 1820, was located near the north gate of Brechin in Scotland’s Highland whisky region. Initially, cooling for the distillery's two stills was provided by the Den Burn, which flowed through the grounds. Coal for production was first delivered by cart from Montrose, later transported by steam train after the railway's arrival in 1848. North Port ceased operations in 1983and was demolished in 1994, with the site now hosting a supermarket. A preserved red sandstone window frame serves as a memorial to this lost Highland malt whisky distillery, whose rare whiskies are occasionally released by independent bottlers.
