North of Scotland
From the 1860s until its closure in 1955, the Forth Brewery operated on the site of the North of Scotland Distillery in Cambus near Alloa, a key location within Scotland’s renowned Lowlands whisky region. In 1957, the brewery buildings were acquired by George Christie and the North of Scotland Distilling Company Ltd., transforming the site into Strathmore Distillery by the following year. Initially focused on producing malt whisky using two pot stills and a Coffey still, the distillery faced financial challenges and pivoted to grain whisky production with three continuous stills in 1960. Renamed the North of Scotland Distillery in 1964, it struggled during a downturn in demand and ultimately closed in 1980, with the site demolished in 1993. Today, the North of Scotland Distillery is remembered as a lost Lowland grain whisky distillery, highlighting an important chapter in Scotland’s rich whisky heritage.
