Lochside 1981 Rare Old Gordon & MacPhail is a rare and highly collectible Highland single malt Scotch whisky from the now-demolished Lochside Distillery, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail as part of their Rare Old series. Distilled in 1981 and matured for around seventeen years in carefully selected refill casks, this limited release captures the distillery’s gentle, cereal-rich character before production ceased in 1992.

Lochside remains one of Scotland’s lost distilleries, with remaining stocks becoming increasingly scarce. Known for its soft, malty and subtly fruity spirit, this expression highlights the purity of the distillate, with refill cask maturation allowing the whisky’s natural character to shine through with minimal oak influence.

The Distillery

Lochside
Lochside Distillery, founded in 1957 near the Montrose Basin in Scotland’s prestigious Highland whisky region, operated within former brewery buildings. Equipped with four pot stills and a Coffey still, Lochside produced both malt and grain whisky intermittently until 1970. The distillery ceased operations in 1992, was dismantled by 1996, and demolished in 2005, now replaced by modern flats. Primarily contributing to renowned Scotch blends, Lochside’s rare single malt Scotch is sought after through independent bottlers such as Hunter Laing’s Sovereign and G&M’s Rare Old, making it a treasured name among whisky enthusiasts.
