Single 1st fill sherry butt #9000008 bottled 2010. The is a 4½ year old bottling from Tobermory distillery on the west coast island of Mull.
The spirits team at Berry Bros are blowing the trumpet for this one "a real oddball of a cask that works".
On the Isle of Mull, between Skye and Islay, out on the edge. Home alone. Originally a brewery but converted into a distillery way back in 1798, so one of our super-elderly. Enjoying life by the sea shore but a tad naked in a breezy environment, divested of its malting floors, filling shed and its warehouses. Its unusually twisted lyne arms contributes to a light, fruity dram.
Most of its whisky matures overseas, some on Islay no less. However, since 2007 a little has been retained in a small warehouse to develop as a true island malt. The unpeated single malt is bottled as Tobermory and the peated version as Ledaig.
Aromas of new leather and sweet toffee shield the underlying smokiness. The palate brims with smoke but has enough texture to keep sweet fruity elements shining through.
