Lagavulin Distillery was established in 1816 by John Johnston on the rocky south coast of the Isle of Islay off the west coast of Scotland. In 1908 Malt Mill Distillery was built next to Lagavulin Distillery but it closed in 1960 and although some of its buildings remain Malt Mill is now a lost distillery. Lagavulin is a malt whisky distillery which welcomes visitors at the Lagavulin visitor centre and offers distillery tours and participates in Feis Ile, the Islay Festival of Malt and Music, and sponsors the Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festival.
The years have mellowed this giant, taming the intensity of its younger sibling, leaving a fruitier, woody nose. As befitting its age and at 52.6% abv, this expression has great balance, displaying all the usual sweet smoky characteristics of Lagavulin while revealing some newer tropical fruit and lighter spice attributes.
