Tasting Notes

Nose: Profound, complex and dry overall. Rich yet elusive, it really takes time to open up, first offering liquid dried fruits; figs, dates or prunes and a trace of treacle toffee. Palate: A voluptuous, oily texture, with a bitter-sweet and gingery, slightly drying start. Intense, with masses of charred wood, oak-smoked meats, honey, burnt treacle tart and ash. Finish: Long, smooth, sweetly honeyed and elegant, with slowly rising fragrant wood smoke, ash, salt and a subtle, chilli like heat; followed by cooling eucalyptus.

Aged for a quarter of a century in sherry oak casks, it honours the legacy of the 21 distillery managers who have guided Lagavulin since its founding in 1816. Released in 2016 as a limited edition of 4,000 bottles, this commemorative dram is a profound expression of Islay character—non-chill filtered and natural in colour.

The Distillery

Lagavulin Distillery, founded in 1816 by John Johnston on the rugged south coast of the Isle of Islay, is celebrated for producing superbly balanced peated single malt Scotch whisky. Originally adjacent to the now-lost Malt Mill Distillery (1908-1960s), Lagavulin retains part of its historic buildings. Equipped with four traditional stills, the distillery crafts iconic expressions like the renowned Lagavulin 16 Year Old and the exclusive Distillers Edition. Each year, a limited single cask bottling is released for Feis Ile, the prestigious Islay Festival of Malt and Music, reinforcing Lagavulin’s status as a premier Islay whisky producer.
