Glen Albyn Distillery, founded in 1844 along the east bank of the Caledonian Canal in Inverness, capitalized on the canal’s opening in 1822, originally intended as a naval shortcut between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. This strategic location enabled easy transport of both raw materials and whisky casks, fostering the distillery’s growth. Although Glen Albyn ceased operations in 1983 and was mostly demolished by 1986, fragments of its old walls remain, commemorating its place in Scottish Highland whisky heritage. Now recognized as a lost distillery, Glen Albyn’s single malt bottlings are exceedingly rare, with examples such as Gordon & MacPhail’s 1976 Rare Old prized by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
