Tasting Notes

Nose: Billows of kiln smoke and salty sea‑spray mingle with vanilla pod, charred coconut and a citrus‑zest brightness. Palate: A bold rush of peat embers, cracked black pepper and liquorice root coats the tongue, followed by sweet caramel fudge, toasted oak and flashes of lemon bon‑bons. Finish: Long, ashy and gently drying—lingering camp‑fire smoke, briny toffee and a final flicker of charred oak spice.

Celebrate whisky history through Islay smoke with Caol Ila 12 Year Old – 2012 Vintage, “Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland” Commemorative. Bottled in 2025 by James Eadie from a single re‑charred hogshead (Cask #313104), this small release pays tribute to W. Y. Crowe’s landmark reference work The Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland 1922‑1929. Re‑charred American oak intensifies Caol Ila’s maritime peat with extra layers of char‑driven vanilla, caramel and warming spice. Presented at natural cask strength, un‑chill‑filtered and natural in colour, this commemorative bottling offers a vivid collision of smoky Islay tradition and book‑lover’s nostalgia.

Why We Think You’ll Love It

  • Commemorates the classic 1920s distillery compendium—perfect for whisky aficionados and book collectors alike.

  • Single re‑charred hogshead amplifies Caol Ila’s briny peat with rich vanilla‑toffee sweetness and charred‑oak depth.

  • 12 years of maturation balance youthful Islay vibrancy with nuanced barrel complexity.

  • Bottled at natural cask strength, non‑chill‑filtered and natural colour for full texture, aroma and authenticity.

  • Limited, individually numbered release by James Eadie—a prized addition for collectors of special‑edition Islay malts.

The Distillery

Caol Ila
Caol Ila Distillery, founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson on a sheltered yet rocky northeastern stretch of the Isle of Islay, is celebrated not only for its breathtaking views across the Sound of Islay—where everything from naval battleships to whales has been spotted—but also for its status as the largest malt whisky distillery on Islay. Renowned for crafting both peated and unpeated expressions, Caol Ila offers iconic releases like the 12 Year Old and the Distiller’s Edition. Each year, the distillery plays a prominent role in Feis Ile, the Islay Festival of Malt and Music, delighting enthusiasts worldwide with its Islay single malt heritage and coastal charm.
