Tasting Notes

Aroma Sweet pineapple and baked apple aromas are complemented by hints of beeswax polish. Soft cane sugar comes to the fore alongside white chocolate and vanilla pod. Taste Soft black pepper and cocoa powder flavours lead to sweet, dried mango. Subtle notes of candied lime and mouth-warming ginger transform into fresh banana bread. Finish Long lasting and vibrant with lingering fruit and soft pepper on the finish.

Caledonian 39 Year Old 1980 Private Collection is an exceptionally rare Lowland single grain Scotch whisky, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail as part of their ultra-premium Private Collection series. Distilled on 3rd August 1980 and matured for nearly four decades in a single refill American hogshead (#92569), this remarkable expression was bottled on 13th August 2020 at natural cask strength, with just 111 hand-blown crystal decanters produced.

Distilled at the now-closed Caledonian Distillery, this long-aged single grain whisky showcases the elegance and complexity that extended maturation can bring. Refill American oak allows the spirit’s natural sweetness to evolve, delivering layers of vanilla, coconut, soft spice, and polished oak, with a silky and refined texture.

The Distillery

Caledonian
Founded in 1855 by Menzies, Bernard, and Craig, the historic Caledonian Distillery was a major player in Edinburgh's whisky industry, strategically located at the west end of Princess Street with its own expansive railway yard adjacent to the Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line. Renowned for producing high-demand grain whisky essential for the burgeoning whisky blending sector, Caledonian supplied pioneering figures like Andrew Usher, a key innovator in blended Scotch whisky. At its peak, the distillery was a massive enterprise contributing significantly to Scotland’s whisky heritage. Although it closed in 1988 and the site was subsequently redeveloped for housing and business use, the Caledonian Distillery remains a pivotal part of Edinburgh’s whisky history, reflecting the city's rich industrial past and enduring legacy in the global whisky market.
