Underneath the fruit lies a subtle layer of salted caramel and honey-roasted nuts. The coastal heritage of Bunnahabhain peeks through as a gentle brine and faint mineral edge, adding a delicate maritime breeze to the sweeter notes. Palate: At 100 proof, the flavors arrive with purpose. Ripe orchard fruits, fig preserves, and rich toffee sauce lead, quickly followed by creamy milk chocolate and a sprinkle of warm baking spices—cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. The Oloroso casks impart a round, syrupy sweetness balanced by a mild nuttiness, while the spirit’s youth lends a fresh and energetic character. Finish: Long, warming, and satisfying. Bunnahabhain Distillery, founded in 1881 on the northeastern tip of the Isle of Islay, sits by Bunnahabhain Bay, overlooking the Sound of Islay. Originally constructed with materials ferried by puffer and unloaded at the distillery pier, it’s now tucked away at the end of a single-track road with spectacular coastal views. Equipped with four large, pear-shaped stills, Bunnahabhain produces Scottish malt whisky for both blends and single malt or single caskbottlings.
