Bowmore lends itself particularly well to Port Wood finishes and this classic but discontinued Dawn bottling oozes' quality. Russet in colour, this full bodied malt takes on an interesting perspective. Distinctly Bowmore on first nosing, the port then imparts its rich full fruit characteristics. Bowmore Bowmore Distillery was established on the Isle of Islay off the west coast of Scotland by John Simpson in 1779. Situated in Bowmore by the shore of Loch Indaal it is the oldest working distillery on Islay and one of the oldest malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. Bowmore Distillery continues to produce a proportion of its malted barley on its own traditional malting floors and malt kilns. Visitors are welcomed in the Bowmore visitor centre where distillery tours are available in addition to Bowmore Distillery cottages to rent. Bowmore Distillery is a participant in Feis Isle, the Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Robust on the aplate, grapes and plumbs add a rich sweetness. If still mineral water is desired with this dram, be careful to add only the tiniest amount so the ruby port essences can still be enjoyed.

The Distillery

Bowmore
Bowmore Distillery, founded by David Simpson in 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Isle of Islay, is recognized as one of the oldest working distilleries on Islay and among the earliest malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. Renowned for its dedication to traditional production methods, Bowmore still malts a portion of its barley on heritage malting floors and uses its own malt kilns—a practice that contributes to its distinct Islay single malt character. Actively participating in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music, Bowmore offers special bottlings during this vibrant celebration, further cementing its reputation among whisky enthusiasts. Popular official releases include the Bowmore 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, and 25 Year Old, each showcasing the distillery’s hallmark fusion of peat smoke and maritime influence that has made Bowmore an essential name in Scotch whisky history.
