Tasting Notes

William Grant converted the ruins of Balvenie House into Balvenie malt whisky distillery in 1892 in order to meet the global demand for William Grant’s Scottish Speyside malt whisky and blended scotch. Balvenie Distillery is situated near Balvenie Castle and the River Fiddich in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region and is one of the few Scottish distilleries to malt barley on its own malt floors and to dry its malted barley over a peat fire in its own malt kiln. Visitors can enjoy an in-depth Balvenie scotch whisky experience and distillery tour. Balvenie Distillery is also a participant in the popular Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

Enter the inner sanctum of Warehouse 24 with The Balvenie Tun 1401 — Batch 8. For this instalment, Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE hand-picked twelve of the distillery’s rarest casksnine traditional American-oak barrels and three European-oak sherry butts — spanning several decades of maturation. The casks were married together for months in the famed Tun 1401, allowing their contrasting characters to meld into a single, deeply complex single malt. Bottled at a robust 50.2 % ABV, Batch 8 was released world-wide in strictly limited quantities (≈ 2,700 bottles), offering an opulent fusion of Balvenie’s honeyed house style, bourbon-cask vanilla and rich sherried depth.

Why We Think You’ll Love It:

  • Crafted from nine bourbon barrels & three sherry butts—hand-selected treasures from Balvenie’s storied Warehouse 24.

  • Married in the iconic Tun 1401, enhancing harmony and depth far beyond a standard single-cask release.

  • Bottled at 50.2 % ABV, non-chill-filtered, preserving full body, aroma and flavour concentration.

  • Highly limited (≈ 2,700 bottles), making it a coveted collector’s piece that epitomises David Stewart’s 60-plus years of maturation mastery.

Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 8 is an indulgent symphony of honeyed sweetness, mature oak and sherried richness—a definitive showcase of the craftsmanship that defines The Balvenie.

Balvenie
Founded in 1824 by James McGregor, Balmenach Distillery is nestled on his farm in Cromdale, within Scotland’s prestigious Speyside whisky region. This ideal location benefits from an abundant supply of chilly, peaty water flowing from the Hills of Cromdale, essential for crafting exceptional single malt Scotch whisky. By 1897, the introduction of a branch line from the Strathspey Railway enabled Balmenach to capitalize on the booming demand for fine Speyside scotch whisky, enhancing its distribution and profitability. Today, Balmenach Distillery stands out as one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries that have preserved their traditional wooden washbacks, worm tubs for cooling spirit from its six copper stills, a round red brick chimney, and historic dunnage warehouses. These authentic features underscore Balmenach’s commitment to traditional whisky-making craftsmanship. Signatory Vintage and Cadenheads are prominent independent bottlers offering Balmenach’s distinguished single malts, while Balmenach’s Caorunn Gin has garnered immense popularity among gin enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned whisky connoisseur or a curious traveler, Balmenach Distillery provides an authentic Speyside whisky experience, blending rich heritage with exceptional quality to create some of Scotland’s finest spirits.
