Tasting Notes

Nose: Billowing hearth smoke, chalky sea-spray and tar, lifted by unexpected notes of ripe banana, lime cordial and menthol sweets. Palate: A riot of smouldering peat embers, cracked pepper and liquorice root collides with bursts of tropical fruit salad, herbal bitters and malt-toffee sweetness. Finish: Long, dry and ashy—lingering camp-fire smoke, grapefruit pith and a final echo of funky pineapple and spearmint.

Unleash the wild side of Islay science with Ardbeg Fermutation – Committee Release 2022. Distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2022 at 13 years old (49.4 % ABV), Fermutation was born from an accident that became an experiment: a boiler breakdown left six washbacks unattended, resulting in an unprecedented three-week fermentation—the longest in Ardbeg’s history. The extra-long ferment created layers of quirky, funky fruit that were then matured in a mix of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon casks. Released exclusively to the Ardbeg Committee, Fermutation marries the distillery’s trademark peat smoke with vibrant, estery fruit and herbal complexity that could only come from this once-in-a-lifetime mishap.

Why We Think You’ll Love It:

  • Created by chance: a three-week fermentation turned an equipment failure into a flavour revolution.

  • 13 years in first-fill and refill bourbon barrels balance dense smoke with bright, estery fruit.

  • Bottled for the Ardbeg Committee only, at a robust 49.4 % ABV and non-chill-filtered.

  • Delivers a unique profile—classic Ardbeg peat layered with exuberant fruit and herbal complexity you won’t find in any other release.

Ardbeg Fermutation is the dram that proves serendipity can be delicious—an experimental Islay whisky for peat lovers who relish the unexpected.

Ardbeg
Established in 1815 by John McDougal, Ardbeg Distillery is located on the Kildalton Peninsula of the Isle of Islay—a region celebrated for its peaty single malts. Drawing soft, peaty water from Loch Uigeadail and Loch Airigh nam Beist in the hills behind the distillery, Ardbeg crafts an iconic range of whiskies, including the highly regarded Ardbeg Uigeadail and Ardbeg 10 Year Old. Each year, Ardbeg takes part in the Feis Ile, the island’s world-renowned Festival of Malt and Music, welcoming visitors to its distillery tours and the Old Kiln Café, which serves mouthwatering Scottish fare.
