Tasting Notes

A full bodied nose of earthy peatiness with a touch of iodine and sea salt. Initially sweet on the palate with peat coming through, a definite honey note takes over giving a smooth mouth feel. The finish is long and lingering with the peat fading slowly and the honey giving a pleasant aftertaste.
Secure a final echo of Islay history with Port Ellen 35 Year Old – 1978 Vintage, Hunter Laing Old & Rare (bottled October 2013).
Distilled five years before the legendary distillery closed (1983), this spirit was laid down in a single sherry-seasoned butt and left to mature undisturbed beside Kilnaughton Bay for three and a half decades. Drawn at natural cask strength for Hunter Laing’s flagship Old & Rare line, just 231 individually numbered bottles preserve Port Ellen’s iconic tar-laden peat now enriched by opulent dried fruit, polished mahogany and maritime spice—a once-in-a-generation dram from a lost Islay giant.

Why We Think You’ll Love It

  • Single sherry butt marries Port Ellen’s medicinal peat with decadent dried-fruit richness and polished oak.

  • 35 years of dunnage maturation temper robust smoke into layers of honeyed resin, mahogany depth and subtle coastal herb.

  • Bottled at natural cask strength, non-chill-filtered and natural colour—delivering undiluted body, aroma and authenticity.

  • From the silent Port Ellen distillery—an increasingly scarce opportunity for collectors and peat devotees.

  • Part of Hunter Laing’s elite “Old & Rare” series—strictly 231 bottles, each individually numbered for ultimate provenance.

Pour a measure of this distinguished Port Ellen and savour a hypnotic union of maritime peat, opulent sherry richness and time-honed elegance—an extraordinary whisky that echoes the spirit of a lost Islay legend long after the final sip.
