Tasting Braes of Glenlivet 23 Year Old Burns Malt Scotch

Posted by Alastair in

Braes of Glenlivet Scotch whiskey distillery rests on the edge of the Cairngorm Mountains in the valley of the River Livet and, at an altitude of 352m where it enjoys a cool climate, is the highest working distillery in Scotland. Opened in 1973 in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region and renamed Braeval in 1995. This relatively new distillery was acquired by the drinks giant Chivas in 2001 who promptly closed it in 2002 but following some refurbishment Braeval reopened in the summer of 2008 and its six stills now produce around 4 million litres of alcohol per year.

Because the orginal name Braes of Glenlivet was lost in 1995 and most of Braeval’s fine malt whisky flows into blended Scotch, Braes of Glenlivet is very rarely available as single malt Scotch. And so The Whisky Barrel jumped at the chance to bring this 23 year old single cask expression into the Burns Malt range. Distilled on 19th May 1989, matured in hogshead cask number 1074 and bottled 23 years later on 26th January 2013 for The Whisky Barrel’s Burns Malt series. Let's give it a go...

Nose: Those wonderfully familiar Speyside notes of pear drops and citrus zest mingling with malty butterscotch flavours and swirl of heather honey.

Palate: Some oily lemon zest, a dash of vanilla, highland oats, ash, mineral and a twist of leather with a long and lovely, sweet warming finish.
