Banff 36 Year Old Douglas Laing Old & Rare Platinum Selection.
Single cask refill hogshead distilled November 1975 and bottled June 2012. 153 numbered bottles.
Sweet barley is immediately evident on the nose – and it opens further with honey, fresh cut summer grass – running to subtle aged and toasted, smoking oak. Palatewise there is a mouthcoating sugar tang of sweetness plus a Galliano liqueur style of spiciness with more late honey (Hot Toddy style) and coffee. Beyond replication of those same flavours – on the finish there is a vanilla fudge quality with the soft spices carrying even more interest.
Banff Single Malt Whiskey
The Mill of Banff Distillery was established by Major James McKilligan at Mains of Colleonard Farm just south of Banff in 1824 but closed in 1863 when Simpson's son built a new distillery on a site at Inverboyndie and named it Banff Distillery. In 1983 Banff Distillery closed, was partially demolished in 1985 and most of the rest came down during a fire in 1991. Banff is a lost Highland malt whiskey distillery with rare examples from the Gordon & MacPhail Rare Old series of bottlings, and all highly sought after.
