Hanyu (Japan)

Hanyu Distillery was built in 1941 to manufacture alcohol, but not whisky. Situated on the main Japanese island of Honsh in Hanyu City to the north of Tokyo. Hanyu commenced production of whisky during the 1980s  and operated with four washbacks and two stills and lightly malted barley. Production ended in 2000 and Hanyu Distillery was demolished in 2004. Sasanokawa Shuzo, a sake maker from northern Japan, and Ichiro Akuto, a grandson of the original owners, rescued and now hold the last casks from Hanyu Distillery and continue to release them in limited edition bottling of Hanyu single malt whisky and Hanyu single cask whisky.
